As many of you may know, Isshin Ryu Aikido is undergoing expansion and has recently moved into a new dojo. This dojo not only represents an official presence and space, but also signals the beginning of a major growth period for our school. I would like to take a moment to express my sincerest gratitude to everyone who has supported us over the years both locally and all across the world. It has been a challenging journey for me, and your support and feedback has been vital to this development.
With any move to a new location, there are always a few basic improvements required to get things up to speed. We’re holding a fundraiser to get these supplies in order that we may get our dojo off to a proper start. Our goal is to raise $1500.00 to pay for these improvements by September 15 and will close the fundraiser on September 30.
The items to be purchased for the fundraiser are: a new mat, paint and painting supplies, a shoe rack, a shelf, and some basic cleaning supplies.
The new mat will fill the last space on the floor needed to complete our training area.
One of the walls in the training hall is in dire need of touch up, and some new paint will make training much more vibrant.
The shoe rack and the shelf will help with clutters and help our students and newcomers keep their training gear and belongings off of the floor.
The cleaning supplies will help us make sure that the training area gets the respect it needs to stay in the best shape as long as possible.
We’re asking everyone in the group for at least a $10 donation would be a great help for us and appreciated. Please follow the link to our website and use Paypal or Venmo or if you are in our area, in person if you like.
Thank you so much!

Russell Jacobson sensei and Harumi joined Suganuma sensei's Aikido Seminar hosted by Vancouver Shomonkai at Nikkei Cultural Center in Vancouver B.C. from Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16. Two big wind & rain storms were expected to swipe the West coast during that weekend. We almost canceled and stayed home, but we were so glad that we didn't! We arrived safely at Vancouver B.C. around 5:30PM on Friday. A little bit windy, but It was mild there. Due to the power outage at the dojo, they canceled their member-only class in the evening. Saturday, we had two classes and testing. One class and the demonstration on Sunday.
About 70 people were on the mat Saturday morning at this beautiful dojo. We were so happy to see our new and old friends. The training was fun as usual. We worked on Tenchinage. Suganuma sensei was so kind to grab many of us individually to show us the proper techniques during classes. Harumi was so happy to be grabbed by him a few times (that means I wasn't doing right...). Sensei's Ki was very gentle and solid. The each movement with him was so smooth and effortless. Harumi appreciated that he let her feel that. Harumi also enjoyed being grabbed by Tama sensei. 4 times!!!! We worked on Ushiro Ryote Tori. Tama sensei is always humble, and trys to explore a better way to do a technique together with her students. She is such a dedicated teacher. Her Ki was so warm and very grounded. She talks in Japanese with Hakata dialect with Harumi, and makes Harumi smile. We trained for three hours total. We sweated like a pig and exhausted in a good way!
We were so impressed by the testing on Saturday. Everyone was solid. Our dearest friend, Russ Qureshi took his 4 Dan test. Every single technique was polished and very convincing. We were so happy to be there. At the end of the test, we heard the general comments from teachers. One of the feedback addressed to everyone was that Zanshin needed to be expressed. This was a great lesson for us.
Sunday class from 10:30 to 12:00 went so quickly, but Harumi exhausted herself quickly too. We worked on Katatori Menuchi techniques. Harumi enjoyed the continuous spiral movement all the way through the technique. After the class, we had the demonstration from noon to 1:00PM. We saw their perfect demonstrational courtesy of going onto and off the mat with full of Ki. Very clean and beautiful. We definitely felt Zanshin.
We appreciated so much for the unforgettable experiences and memories shared with our friends and teachers. Suganuma sensei's inspirational quote, "Be Lively, Right Here, Right Now!" has been in our heart. We will definitely do it again next year!!!!
